Pizzo Canariscio (CH) - 2 526 meters

Nr 21

20th summit in Switzerland

Last and easiest peak on our hike today (out of 5 including Giübin, Pizzo Prevat, Rotstock and Posmeda).

We passed this summit on our way back to the St.Gotthard Pass. It gives a great view of the valley and to a peak that I'd like to hike soon (Poncione di Löita del Pizzo) which unfortunately this time was too hard to add in the end. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures and therefore the selection is quite limited as can be seen below.

Our route was the one coming up from the eastern side following the path 144  explained in the official guides of the CAS (Swiss Alpine Club), page 153 of the 3rd volume (Guida delle alpi ticinesi, dal Passo San Gottardo al Pizzo di Claro).

The route is shown in the first picture below, it's basically a ridge coming from Giübin and Posmeda and the logic continuation back to the Passo del San Gottardo.

Of course this path could be done also in the opposite way as it's a round course.

In fact there would have been a more logical Route which would have also included Pizzo Centrale which would have led circleing us around the Sella Lake, but our hiking partner told us that he felt unsafe watching gate ridge from distance and therefore that peak waits for me for the next time. Below you will find the route we did this time, having said that, I would recommend to start out the opposite way we did (so with Pizzo Canariscio and follow the ridge around, passing on from Pizzo Prevat to Pizzo Centrale and back down from the northern side of the lake).

Level: T3-  (due to the north-west sided descent in which we got a bit lost in the rocks which are shown in the first picture), otherwise it could also be a T2 as there is a country road which is going up almost to the top.
