Monte Spelucco (IT) - 1 385 meters

Nr 106

This was my first peak in the border region of southern Ticino and Italy, which was not listed as an official peak in the swiss alpine guides (which of course is not mandatory, as the peak is in Italy, but still..).

Having said that, it is listed as an official peak on hikr.org and on the Italian and Swiss topographic maps and therefore it's more than good enough to be on my list, even if I would call it a "side-peak" as it's far from being a mandatory summit where one has to stand on once in a lifetime even if the front views are really nice.

This was the second peak of today's "backyard-hike" into Valsolda in Italy (Monte Saletta - Monte Spelucco - Cima Cavrighè). Simplified, the way I took to get here was: Cureggia - Pian di Scagn - Border to Italy - Alpe Bolgia - Alpe di Castello; check out the Route linked below for a more precise information.

Monte Spelucco is the peak where you probably get the best view of Valsolda (pic 3 shows it perfectly.. it's awesome), while still being in the valley and not yet at the Swiss border.

I'm not really sure if I would recommend to come here though, as above there are higher peaks with complete 360° views.

For sure it was interesting to hike around in a wild environment as this one, where the poor quality of paths clearly shows that it's not your typical hiking region. Moreover it's important to say, that from the moment I passed the border and abandoned the Swiss paths, i did not encounter one single person until I went back to Switzerland a few hours later... only a few deers.

From a difficulty standopoint there is nothing special to remark, there is no danger of falling at any time but you need some off-path walking to reach the top of the peak..and there is some risk to get lost unfortunately..
