"Hi Mountain Peak" - "Hi Luke, nice to meet you.."
This was where it all began (likely..?), my summit hunt started with this mountain. Little did I know back then that I was going to make a webpage about this moment and that this will be my number 1 peak ever and basically the starting point to this probably lifelong journey, but that's exactly what it was. My Summit Hunt is going to be more like a "leisure-hunt", nothing too serious, but still..I wonder on how many mountains I will have been standing at least once in my life from now on..
Together with Monte Boglia, it's probably the best of the lower mountains in terms of views in this region (third picture is from the top).
The Monte San Giorgio is the 11th-smallest mountain in the Canton Ticino.
We started (far away) from Chiasso due to the Trans-Swiss Trail project and therefore walked up from south following path 815 from Meride, which is explained in the official guides of the CAS (Swiss Alpine Club), page 530 of the 5th volume (Guida alle prealpi ticinesi).
I hiked up Monte San Giorgio as it's part of the Trans-Swiss Trail (part 1) and therefore a good route can be found directly following that link.
Having said that, the mountain gives many possibilities for an ascent, my favourite two Routes here would probably be:
1- coming up from the eastern ridge where you could also take a cable car (starting from the village of Brusino Arisizio) for the first 300 vertical meters.
2- more or less the one we did today but much shorter. I would recommend to drive to the village of Meride (or take a Bus to there from Mendrisio) and walk up from there to the summit.
